Dermot Fowler is a London based designer exploring the relationship between narratives and the material world through the medium of jewellery. In a reassessment of archaic myths and allegories, illustrated fragments are distorted by cabochon gemstones and ulexite slabs. These allude to our altered view of traditional narratives through the frenetic lens of the digital age, as well as evoking talismanic qualities from jewellery’s distant past; allegory and material reality coming together in a singular object, conveying a distant dream for future eyes.
Material is front and centre of Dermot Fowler’s design practice. After an initial foray with his Grandparent’s old silversmithing tools, he pursued a Jewellery Design degree at Central Saint Martins, working with Celine in Paris and Hannah Martin in London during his placement year. His style developed as a love of storytelling was fused with craft knowledge and a scrupulous design process led by drawing, gouache painting and model making. His visual references span from medieval art to post-industrial cityscapes, and find expression through hand cut stones, enamelled etchings and illustrations burnt into wooden beads.
